Writing about Italy is always difficult because there is something about the country that makes observers want to exaggerate. We take great care to avoid doing this, but you – the reader – have no certain way to know that. So we have decided to prove our point by being visibly restrained about something.
The portrait above – this is the absolute truth – is of Italy’s new Minister for Equal Opportunity, the Honorable Mara Carfagna. “Equal opportunity” in the context of the Italian Cabinet means “womens’ affairs.” She was formally sworn in today as the recently elected Berlusconi government took power. Since we are being even-handed, that is all we have to say about the matter.
